Seymour Dragon Goes to School
by Joan Sullivan Peeples
Joan Sullivan Peeples (1929-1973) was a writer, illustrator, journalist, fine artist, and musician who grew up in the small Wisconsin town of Neenah. She relocated to South Florida with her husband, Bill, and their two young children in 1959.
Joan pursued her art, music, and writing while she and Bill raised their family, and both worked as newspaper journalists at The Miami News, one of the city’s two daily papers in the ’60s.
A lifelong lover of animals, she also became an in-demand pet portrait artist in Miami and then in Los Angeles, where the family moved in 1968.
Joan created the Seymour Dragon character and the heartwarming story of friendship and inclusion in 1966 as a first birthday gift for her nephew, Scott Joachim Peeples.
She wrote the 13-page story, illustrated it, and used a cut-up Duo-Tang school folder, duct tape, and staples to bind the pages.
Lovingly preserved by Scott, Seymour Dragon Goes to School has remained in the family and unpublished until now, and the First Edition published in 2021 by Joan’s son and daughter Stephen and Ruth is as close to the original as possible, right down to the staples and duct tape.
