Texas Artlaw Boyd Elder displayed pieces from his new “American Fetish — RIP” series of painted and adorned animal skulls at an exhibit in Venice, California, called the “Chingadero Show.”
The opening reception on Easter Sunday, April 2, 1972, was attended by Elder friends and patrons including Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Cass Elliott, David Geffen, Ned Doheny and more.
The show also marked the first public performance of the group Eagles. They’d go on to feature “American Fetish” pieces on the covers of three albums — “One of These Nights” (1975), “Their Greatest Hits” (1976) and “The Very Best of Eagles” (2003).
Famed rock photographer and friend of the artist and guests Henry Diltz took stills and shot some Super 8 at the “Chingadero” event. Special thanks to him for permission to reprint a few pics in this gallery.
Elder’s friend and former Chouinard Art Institute classmate Rick Griffin, who painted the turkey breast that inspired Elder’s “American Fetish” series several months earlier, drew the event poster for a limited-edition run. It’s now very rare.
